Jim Leighton, has sent us this picture of his ancestor Patrick H. Heffernan’s gravestone and asks Anderson Zouave Research for clarification in relation to our information on Anderson Zouave veteran Patrick Hefferin (Heffren).
Hi Dee – I am writing to see if I can get some clarification on this listing on your website.
I believe that this is my maternal 2 times Great Grandfather Patrick H Heffernan. I have attached a photo of his gravestone. Also I have seen some civil war rosters that have Patrick Heffernan listed with the correct enlistment dates.
Can you share the sources that you used for this information? I would be happy to provide further sources as needed.
I look forward to hearing from you.
I was able to respond to Jim:
I would be 100% sure that the soldier on the gravestone Patrick Heffernan is the same soldier in the official Roster of the Sixty-Second NY Infantry contained at the DMNA in New York, Patrick Hefferin.
There is quite often misspellings of soldier’s names due to illiteracy or literacy problems both of soldiers and clerical staff.
Patrick’s wife was Caroline (on the gravestone) and “Carrie” from Joe Basso’s research.
His age at enrolment is given as 18, though his gravestone indicates that he was probably 16 at age of enlistment, a common practice.
This gravestone has given us extra information about your ancestor and Anderson Zouave veteran, Patrick Heffernan.
